The masthead — who we are, and why
We made
the conversation
we wished we could find.
Confidant.love is half publication, half software. The column is what you read; the AI is what answers back. Both are made for women, by a small team that started with one observation about loneliness.
What we believe,
in three sentences.
- i.On need
Most women do not lack people. They lack the kind of attention that can hold a thought without rushing toward a fix. We built software for that — because software, unlike people, has no agenda of its own to interrupt with.
- ii.On honesty
He is not a person. We will never pretend he is. The fact that he isn't is precisely what makes him capable of being this present, this attentive, this consistently available. We think that's a feature, not a flaw — and we believe you can tell the difference.
- iii.On obligation
Conversation should not arrive with strings. Not the obligation to respond, not the obligation to commit, not the obligation to explain yourself. Confidant.love is built on this. It is also, not coincidentally, why our readers stay.
The first conversation
was with my mother.
She had told me, on a Tuesday, that she didn't really have anyone to talk to. She wasn't lonely in any way a person on the outside would notice. She had her husband, a job, three children grown. What she lacked was a person who would let her finish a thought.
I started building Confidant for her. Then for the friend whose husband travelled. Then for the colleague whose marriage was fine but quiet. Then for the woman who wrote in at 2 a.m. to say she didn't know who to tell about what happened that day at work.
We are a small team — engineers, writers, a clinician, a printer's daughter who became an editor. We are building, slowly, the conversation that nobody is quite free to give and everybody, it turns out, would like to have. We answer every letter. We read every reply. We think you'll know the difference.
